Toto Wolff Preparing to Divest Stake Valuing Mercedes Formula 1 Team at £4.6bn

Team Principal Wolff has led Mercedes to historic success in F1

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction estimates Mercedes at £4.6 billion – a record for an F1 team – after McLaren was appraised at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to ownership structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who owns one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding in the region of five percent.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team principal and chief executive officer should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Breakdown

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos, who both hold one-third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We will be making no official statement on the matter. The management structure of Mercedes F1 stays unaltered, and each shareholder are dedicated to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Valuation Increase

The deal signifies a significant increase in worth of the Mercedes team after Ineos Group bought its share for £208 million in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the expansion in valuations of F1 teams in the past few years as a consequence of the increasing appeal of Formula 1 globally.

This trend was evident with the success of the Formula 1 film featuring Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and earned more than $630m (£458m) at the box office.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing movie and the most successful sports movie ever released.

Present Performance

Mercedes are runner-up in the team standings, trailing McLaren, with three Grands Prix left in the current championship.

Their lead driver George Russell has won two of the 21 grands prix so far and is fourth in the individual standings after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a record eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
