On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Defying advice to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Core Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
